Ukraine defeats last year’s Nations League finalist

The Ukrainian men’s national volleyball team continues to show character and fighting spirit in its debut Nations League season.

In their seventh match of the tournament, Raul Lozano’s squad earned a hard-fought victory over Japan — last year’s Nations League finalist.

The match was dramatic and tense. Japan took the first set, but the Ukrainians responded immediately, winning the next two sets with convincing margins. Japan managed to equalize, forcing the game into a decisive fifth set. There the battle raged until the very last ball, but it was Ukraine who showed more composure at key moments and edged out the opponent 15:13.

Nations League 2025. Men. Second week. Seventh match
June 27, Friday
Ukraine — Japan — 3:2 (24:26, 25:17, 25:18, 22:25, 15:13)

This victory became Ukraine’s fourth in the 2025 Nations League and another testament to the team’s progress at the international level. Despite Japan arriving at the tournament without several of its leaders, it remained an extremely organized opponent and a serious test for any team.

The Ukrainian squad still has one more match left in the second week — against the hosts, Bulgaria. The game will take place on June 29 at 19:00.
